Well unfortunately, we live in a world where your success in both your professional and personal life depends on how you 'present' yourself.
Are you a nice person? A positive person? Well put-together? The way that you present yourself will attract people of similar interest to form relationships with you (again both professionally and personally). Going through the handbook I have decided to reflect upon my own 'presentation' and create a summative blog post about it.
1. Ethical explorations in presenting BAPP blog:
- Being sensitive, respectful and fair when speaking about someone/ something else
- To reference/cite anyone else's articles or ideas when posting about it
- To use platform responsibly in a fair and unbiased way
2. How we present ourselves online:
- Professionally - no abbreviated text or slang (unless quoting)
- Positive and neutral - putting 'best foot forward'
- Don't let any self-doubts come in - unless it is a post about doubt and how it affects people
3. How much of ourselves should be presented online:
- Its always best for personal political or religious views to not be posted online as situations always seem to turn nasty (as people's opinions are different)
- Ethical debate of people feeling 'powerful' behind a computer screen with an anonymous name so don't care whom they hurt or what they say
- When discussing something it is always important to back it up with fact
- It is important to be willing to see things from other people's opinions and to respect their argument - otherwise don't get involved
- In an audition room it is important to still be yourself whilst still being professional because directors want people they will get on with to work with and not robots
- The performing world is very small and so it is important to stay kind and nice to everyone because you never know who is around and who they know
- "Save it for the car". After seeing a show that you did not particularly enjoy or have a strong opinion about, it is always best to express once you are in private because again; you never know who is around you!
There were, of course, other avenues that I explored but decided this post would just be a summary of the most important aspects of my professional practice.
What are some of your thoughts on how we 'present' ourselves to the world?
