Be More Specific

As I am halfway through my Module 2 process I thought I would share an important discovery I have made along the way.

BE SPECIFIC. When coming up with my inquiry I decided to explore "making theatre more accessible to people with disabilities". This stemming from my own work with children with disadvantages ranging from Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), being hearing-impaired or having slight physical disability.

The further I delved into this topic, the broader it seemed to become. First having to explore what the terms 'theatre', 'accessible' and 'disability' define and then researching into such topics. I spent a lot of time researching as much as I could into all of these topics. Because my inquiry seemed to be so broad, I was battling to find a viewpoint to rest on and find research that remained relevant. Therefore, using all the information I had gathered, as well as my peaking interest into the effect theatre seems to have on children with ASD, I managed to narrow my inquiry.

Having to 'cull' some of my research at first made me feel as though it had been a waste of time, but I realise it all added to my inquiry topic. No information ever seems to go to waste! This to me seems the point of Module 2 - to be able to explore within the realm of my profession and explore other people's views or standing on the topic. This is helping to shape a well-rounded perspective on this specific part of my practice.

Now that I have narrowed my inquiry topic and have found relevant research, it really seems to be taking shape and I am excited at the prospect of (hopefully) being able to carry out the inquiry in Module 3.
